The Galata Tower has crowned the skyline of Beyoğlu since 1348, when the Genoese raised it as the "Christea Turris" — the Tower of Christ — at the top of their walled colony. Nearly 67 metres of medieval stone rise over nine floors to a top gallery with a full 360° sweep across the Golden Horn, the historic peninsula and the Bosphorus beyond.
It is a place wrapped in legend: in the 17th century Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi is said to have strapped on wings and glided from the tower all the way across the Bosphorus to Üsküdar.
