Topkapi Palace

Topkapi Palace crowns Seraglio Point in Sultanahmet, at the tip of the old city where the Bosphorus meets the Golden Horn. Take the T1 tram to the Sultanahmet stop and follow the path behind Hagia Sophia; the gate is a short, pleasant walk uphill. Since it sits right beside Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, the palace slots easily into the same day exploring the historic peninsula.

Arrive right at opening to walk the courtyards before the tour groups fill them. Mornings offer the calmest atmosphere and the best light over the Bosphorus terraces, and the palace grounds are especially lovely in spring and autumn. Give yourself two to three hours to do it justice, more if you linger in the Treasury. Check the weekly closing day before you go, as the palace shuts one day midweek.

This is a ticketed site, and the Harem requires a separate ticket well worth adding for its tiled chambers and imperial rooms.
