Pergamon — Bergama today — was one of the great cities of the ancient world, first Greek and then Roman, and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its Acropolis crowns a steep hill above the plain, home to the Temple of Trajan, the altar of Zeus and the steepest theatre of the ancient world, cut dramatically into the slope for around 10,000 spectators.
