Sümela Monastery

Sümela lies in the Altındere Valley National Park, about 45 km south of Trabzon on Turkey's Black Sea coast, roughly an hour's drive inland into the mountains. Most visitors base themselves in Trabzon — which has an airport with domestic flights — and reach the monastery by car, taxi or organised tour. From the valley car park a shuttle and a walking path lead up through the forest to the entrance.

Come in late spring, summer or early autumn: the mountain road can close in winter snow, and the valley is often wrapped in mist and rain. Mornings are best for clearer views before the cloud builds. Even in summer it stays cool and damp at altitude, so bring a layer and a rain jacket, and expect a climb on steps and forest paths — sturdy shoes matter.

The monastery has undergone major restoration, so check current opening status before you go.
